Chapter Eight
The next night, Tom picked me up for dinner after work. I'd taken Mark up on his offer to help with Gracie, and I'd walked her over there a few minutes before Tom arrived.
"You look beautiful, Cathy," Mark said.
I smoothed my hands over the black skirt I'd put on for the date. "Thank you."
"Maybe I shouldn't watch Gracie. I could keep you home and maybe have you to myself."
"You're the biggest flirt I've ever met," I said to Mark. "I'll come back by and get her as soon as we're done with dinner."
We chatted for a couple more minutes, but Gracie wasn't having it. She was full of energy, and Mark left to take her on a walk. It was good because I needed to use the last few minutes to finish my makeup. I'd just bought a new eye shadow palette, and I was following along on a video tutorial of how to use it. I thought my makeup looked great, and I got it done just in time for Tom to arrive. He had a bouquet of daisies for me, so I put those in a vase and set them on my dining room table.
"You look amazing," Tom said.
"Thank you so much. I'm probably going to mess up my makeup with the ribs, but hopefully, I won't get any on my outfit," I said.
"Well, even if you do, you'll still be the most beautiful woman in the room,” he said.
"You're not in the room yet," I teased. "There's no way you could possibly know that."
"I don't have to be in the room to know, Cathy,” he said and pulled me close.
We shared a kiss before heading out to Tom's SUV. "You brought the big one tonight," I said when I saw his Escalade.
"Yep. Instead of having Carl and Camille meet us at the restaurant, I've arranged to pick them both up," Tom said.
"Oh, that's a good idea," I said.
With Camille's permission, I'd passed her number along to Carl through Tom. They must have made all of the arrangements already.
We picked up Carl first, and then drove over to Camille's house. Carl got out and went to her door while Tom and I waited in the Escalade.
"What do you think she's going to think of Carl?" Tom asked me while Carl waited on Camille's front porch for her to answer the door.
"He's a nice guy, and he's handsome. She's had bad luck with men, so if he's a decent guy, I think they'll hit it off," I said.
"Carl's a good man," Tom said. "If they hit it off, he'd be good to her."
"She deserves that," I said. "But friend of yours or not, if he hurts her, I'll have to do him in."
"Hey, you can't threaten to kill people to a cop," Tom said with a chuckle, but he took my hand and kissed the back of my knuckles.
"I think I just did," I teased.
Camille answered the door, and she smiled when she saw Carl. While they were walking back to the SUV, she gave me a quick thumbs-up.
